Little old Tony Blair is going to be leaving the office of Prime Minister in 15 days, and feels that he has been unfairly treated by the press, referring to them as ‘feral beasts’ and stating that they have “the prerogative of the harlot through the ages.”

Geez, Tony, that’s some pretty harsh criticism. Many Americans don’t realize that the British tabloid press goes way beyond what most American publications would find appropriate (or feel that they could get away with).

Much of this blame in the media can be centered (as usual) on one guy, Rupert Murdoch, hardly my favorite human being on earth. Sometimes I feel that the only reason that lightning hasn’t struck him dead is that his network brought us The Simpsons and allowed it to do pretty much whatever they wanted. Other than that, it’s pretty much all bad news, from the consolidation of media outlets to the politicising of newspapers and certain cable news networks.

But that’s straying from the subject a little bit. It was Tony Blair that decided that his country should be the only major country to join President Bush’s Coalition of the Willing, sending British troops to die in a war started by American Neocons for oil profits.

It was Blair that went against the wishes of his people, the people that elected him. The war was (is) more deeply unpopular over there than even here.

It was Blair that acted like President Bush’s dog, wagging his tail and seeking approval from the more powerful leader, picturing some sort of rosy scenario in which he’d be hailed as the next Churchill.

So to Mr. Blair, who is upset at how he has been treated in the press?

This Week In Stupid

It looks like we’re in Baghdad to stay, at least until they kick us out. When they do, the Iraqis will have an excellent new billion dollar palace, the under-construction Embassy Baghdad (which sounds like a hotel, but is really the new U.S. Embassy). On average, U.S. embassies cover about 10 acres…This lovely piece of construction covers 104. Kind of a little bit bigger.

As ridiculous as that sounds, that’s not the winner of This Week In Stupid. That prize goes to Berger Devine Yaeger Inc., the architecture firm that has designed the damn thing. I’d like to know which genius was responsible for…wait for it, this is good…posted computer generated images of the floorplans of the thing. I’m sure they just wanted to let the Iraqis know the most convenient route to get inside.

Unsurprisingly, the State Department didn’t think that this was too kosher, and made them take the pics down. But unless the insurgants are unfamiliar with Google, well, I think they know what’s going on.

Democrats Cave

So, I don’t get it. The American people, almost all of them, 7 out of 10, are against the war. The Democrats are against the war. But the spending bill that Bush wanted will be passed now, with no timetable, funding the war at least for another year. And what do we get out of this? Pelosi and Co. have done a good job up until now making clear that the only way that legislators can help and this war is to deny funds to continue it. No one wants the soldiers being underfunded (the Bush Administration was doing a good job of that on their own–who needs Kevlar or armored Humvees?), but short of the president changing his mind, we’ve got no other option.

And now this.

It’s bullshit.
