Susan Boyle, to the Surprise of the Idea of Progress
The Idea of Progress could care less about American Idol (or any other versions of the show).
The Idea of Progress doesn’t really care for showtunes.
But have you heard about Susan Boyle, from Britain’s Got Talent? If you haven’t, and have got a few minutes, watch this clip:
Watched it yet?
Okay, I’ll wait.
You’re back.
One of the main reasons I don’t care for these competition shows is that I don’t like watching people humiliated on television. You can say they know what they’re in for, but that’s simply not true. The people that go on these shows with the misguided idea that they will be stars are the same people that need to be informed that the lottery isn’t for investment purposes.
But then you get someone like Susan Boyle. Someone who lives alone with her cat, who is unemployed, and who admitted before she went on that she’s never even been kissed at the age of ‘almost 48.’ My heart went out to her, and I didn’t want to see this poor woman humiliated.
Of course, I knew she was going to sing well. It’s been in the New York Times and on NPR. But I didn’t expect her voice to have such an emotional depth or range.
I just hope she’s going to do well after this whole debacle is over. No doubt she will have a record contract. The video of her singing has been viewed like 40 million times, if you add up all of the views on the various videos on YouTube.
Damn. I guess this is why people watch these shows. Pretty amazing.
I’d still like to punch Simon Cowell in the face, though.
Found the clip on Gingers is the Watchword

The fact that she has a one-in-a-million voice is definitely raised an order of magnitude by seeing the smarm fall off of Cowell’s face as this unmarketable visage belts out with a voice God created for His own listening pleasure.
In completely unrelated news, after deliberation, I have conceded that your blog is part of a binary system that exerts influence over the entire blogosphere (now named the “What I Like About the Universe Universe”.) Please use this power wisely.
Watching the smarm fall off of Cowell’s face as this unmarketable visage belted forth with a voice that God surely created for His own listening pleasure was delicious hubris.

I love that she was so genuine and the sweet ying to the evil yang that is Simon Cowell. Check out my site for what is the best use for a bag of frozen oranges.
Susan Boyle is an exceptionally talented lady who’s been subjected to considerable pressure in the media. IMHO she deserves all of the success that she is currently enjoying.
Susan Boyle may not be a very good looking woman but she has an angelic voice. ‘

I have seen the performance of Susan Boyle and it is never short of excellent. Definitely one of the best voices out there. **

I’m impressed, I have to say. Really not often do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you could have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the problem is one thing that not enough persons are speaking intelligently about. I’m very joyful that I stumbled throughout this in my search for one thing relating to this.
